Walk for a Cause

Join me Saturday, October 24 in making a meaningful difference in the lives of kids in crisis in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. I have taken an important step in supporting the mission of Home of the Innocents and will participate in Home Run 2009 at Bernheim Forest.
Did you know that…
- Home of the Innocents has up to 35 medically fragile children on the waiting list every night. These families are desperately in need of a bed in the Kosair Charities Pediatric Convalescent Center. In fact, there are medically fragile children who have waited 5 years.
- There are 7,500 children in Kentucky in the foster care system, and more than 1,500 of these children depend on the services of the Home each year.
- Children with autism are being diagnosed at epidemic rates – In the past four years, diagnoses of autism have nearly doubled nationwide, making this once-rare disorder one of the most prevalent conditions, more common than childhood cancer, diabetes and Down syndrome. The Home’s autism program is expanding rapidly to try and meet this growing need, but 55 families are on the waiting list to receive Home-to-Home Autism services.
The support of our local community is extremely important in helping the Home continue to meet the needs of kids in crisis in our region. They can’t do it without support from the community. My participation in Home Run 2008 will help raise funds that will benefit programs and services at the Home, and I need your help.

You can also join me and register to walk or run by going to www.homerun2009.com. Click on “Register Here” at the top of the page. If you are unable to walk or run, please sponsor me or volunteer your time.
Once you register, the Home will send you information about this year’s Home Run by email. Please encourage your friends, family members, partners, and neighbors to register as well.
The Home of the Innocents is our community’s single most powerful and enduring resource to kids in crisis in our region, and this year you can be a part of that mission. Sponsor me today, or even better, register and walk or run with me on Saturday, October 24!

Nose Bleed again

Yesterday, I woke and blew my nose as I usually do. Again I had a nose bleed. I trained on Saturday and Sunday for the mini marathon. This time the nose bleed lasted about 2 hours. I held my nose between my knees, pinching it close for maybe five minutes. I placed a cold rag on my face. I then just stuffed both nostrils with cotton. I had work to do and could not be stopped by a nose bleed. I worked for about and hour. Then on my out for work, I took to cotton out and still my nose bled. I wiped my face and put more cotton in, but this time just my left nostril . Then I was off to work. I kept the cotton in for about two hours and work and it had stopped.

This week, remembering Dana.

Well actually it was last Friday, that a co-worker of mine was killed by her ex-boyfriend. I remember working with her during winter break in December. She was talking about breaking up with her boyfriend because he was drinking again. When she met him, he seemed to be over drinking, but she was not going to let him bring her down. She was a graduate student and work two jobs, like myself. No children and trying accomplish things in her life. I remember her saying she was not arguing with him and she was not putting his things out, she left allowed him to keep the key and his brother was going to get the things from her place that day. I heard on the news Friday night that a man was arrested for public intoxication and told the police that he assaulted his girlfriend. I thought nothing of it. When I arrived at work the woman I was relieving for the shift said. Dana is died. I looked at her surprisingly wondering if this was some kind of joke. She went on to say her boyfriend killed her. And that I may be short staffed that night because another co-worker was taking the new badly.

A couple of days letter I found out that he allegedly hit her on the head with a hammer twice, cut her and strangled her. I shed tears of anger and wonder, is something I could have done. Is there something I could have done.

Technology autobiography

I used Apple computers in school. When I went college I used Microsoft computers. I prefer to use a PC. I do not know how to use the Apple McIntosh computers. I am familiar with excel, word, and PowerPoint. I created a web page when I was an undergraduate at WKU. However, the server I programmed it to crashed or is no longer in exist. I spent hours and days creating the website. I had links on each page to take the surfer to the next. The links were animated creatures. I received an excellent review of the website. I just wish I had put it on a more secure Internet server.

Nose Bleed

I woke up tonight with a nose bleed. After cleaning myself up and stopping the nose bleed, I google nose bleeds and marathons. I have started training for the Derby mini marathon. I did not train yesterday nor today because I work to full-time shifts. I found several blogs about the topic. I found blogs about people running and having nose bleeds. So I decided to start a blog to track my progress. I trained Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I will need to find some way of at least walking on my double shift days.

Shopping

I have many things to do and little time to accomplish it. I went shopping for supplies to put in literacy centers in my classroom. I decided to shop at a different store today. I usually just go to Wal-mart and get everything. But today I went to Staples and Target. I love TARGET. That store as the best notecards and different shape note paper at a reasonable price. I will shop there the next time I need to restock my centers. I will keep looking for a cheaper place to buy as well.

First Blog EVER!

I am in a Louisville Writing Project Podcast training as part of my EDAP693 Teaching Writing P-12 course. Today I have created this blog. I am somewhat nervous because, although I love to write my first drafts do not always have correct grammar usage. I guess I can't be perfect ALL the time?
